Chain Reaction Ride Leaders – Responsibilities

  • Lead by Example
    • Call out turns
    • Stop at stop signs, red lights … obey all traffic signs
    • Call out hazards
  • Assign someone to go over the safety brief before the ride (perfectly ok for the person assigned to be the Ride Leader).
  • Know the route – Review the route and note hazards, tricky turns, etc. (Optional) Have the route available for those who show up to the ride without the route(s).
  • Set & Maintain the Pace
    • Help ride participants understand the pace. If the pace is 18-20 mph, the average pace for the ride should be 19 mph. Explain this is the pace when conditions permit.
    • Start the ride, pulling at the set pace
    • Allow other to pull, however, you should stay towards the front ensuring the correct pace is maintained.
    • If a group wants to go ahead, let them understand they are on their own. If multiple groups are participating, encourage them to “level up” to a faster pace group.
  • Regroup as needed if the ride is a “no drop” ride.
  • Do not change the route unless unplanned risks occur (construction, rain). Regroup is mandatory before modifying the route.
  • Always keep a mental note of the nearest shelter in case shelter is required.
  • Mentor and train other riders if you are in a position to do so.

Chain Reaction Ride Sweepers – Responsibilities

  • No rider left behind. You are ALWAYS the last rider to finish the route.
  • Stay with anyone experiencing problems. NEVER leave anyone behind. Arrange a pickup if the rider cannot complete the course and remain with the rider until the pickup arrives.
  • You may ride a shorter route with a rider if necessary. However, a new Sweeper must be assigned before you modify the route.
  • Identify riders who are not capable of maintaining the set pace and make the proper recommendation for next steps (different pace group, different CRC ride, etc).
  • Mentor and train other riders as you will see more riders than anyone else.
